The Sunday Salon: Read-a-Thon Wrap Up and Records Broken

Has everyone recovered from yesterday’s Read-a-Thon?  Or perhaps, like me, you’re still in the process of doing so? I admit, I’m getting off to a more sluggish-than-usual start this morning … yet at the same time, I want nothing more than to catch up on blogs and yes, more reading.

I didn’t read for the entire 24 hours, but I managed a total of 8 hours reading and 652 pages.  That’s the most time and most pages I’ve ever accomplished during a Read-a-Thon.  My reading consisted of:

– Finishing the last two stories (“Killing Season” and “Shadow on a Weary Land”) in Reasons for and Advantages of Breathing, an incredibly well-written collection of eight short stories by Lydia Peele.

– Finishing The Elegance of the Hedgehog, by Muriel Barbary (including 20 minutes on audio).

– Starting and finishing The Blind Contessa’s New Machine by Carey Wallace; Little Billy’s Letters: An Incorrigible Inner Child’s Correspondence with the Famous, Infamous, and Just Plain Bewildered by Bill Geerhart; and Lay Back the Darkness, Poems by Edward Hirsch.

I’ve never finished one book during the Read-a-Thon, much less three!

Last year, I read a total of 56 books during the entire year, and among the many great things about this year’s Read-a-Thon was that my total reading for the year matched that total. (That is also probably the worst written sentence I’ve ever created.  Hopefully you understand what my not-caffeined enough brain is trying to say:  I’m tied with last year’s record for books read.)

I also finished one of my reading challenges, the Support Your Local Library Challenge.  I signed up to read 75 library books, and between my books and ones read aloud to the kids, I accomplished that yesterday.

So, its been a good reading week.  On tap for today is catching up on the blogs (I feel bad for not cheerleading as much as I wanted to during the Read-a-Thon), making dinner in the crockpot (Easy Cheesy Ravioli Casserole) and taking Betty to the movies.  She’s been talking non-stop about wanting to see “Secretariat” (Disney’s excessive advertising during all of her regularly scheduled television shows has been effective in this house) and asking me at every opportunity to take her, so we’ll be trotting off to the 4:00 matinee later this afternoon.

Congratulations on breaking your previous records!

I listened to “The Elegance of the Hedgehog” and absolutely adored the audio production. I hope you liked it 🙂

Sounds like you had a very productive Readathon!

I’ve almost matched my books-read total for last year as well, so I may actually exceed 50 this year!
