Where can you find a short story about a harsh reform school/detox center in the middle of a resort-like setting, twins who travel together (as adults) to an Italian village seeking a boy they both liked in high school, and tJohn Wilkes Booth’s family members?

Here, in Karen Joy Fowler’s What I Didn’t See and Other Stories.

These are fairly cerebral stories, requiring some thought as to how the stories fit into the historical events they represent or the context of their times.  (I’m not intelligent enough to say that I got every reference contained within. Far from it.)  Still, this is a wonderful collection of 12 stories.

Karen Joy Fowler brings her reader right into the story.
