Book Blogger Hop: Favorite Author Edition

It’s not quite Friday as I write this post, but I figure if hostess-with-the-mostess Jen from Crazy for Books has this week’s Hop post ready to go, then it’s OK for the rest of us to join in.

So, hello and welcome to any new bloggers stopping by from the Hop!  This has been fun to do for the past three weeks. One can never have too many blogs to discover, right?

Similarly, I feel that one can never have too many favorite writers and this week Jen asks us to share some of ours.

My favorite author is Flannery O’Connor.  I love short stories and in my view, she is the gold standard in this form. I took a college course where we studied Faulkner, O’Connor, and Toni Morrison, and that class is responsible for my love of Southern literature and all things Flannery O’Connor.  (See my review of Brad Gooch’s biography, Flannery: A Life of Flannery O’Connor here.)

I absolutely love Lorrie Moore (again for the short stories; “People Like Us Are the Only People Here” is probably one of the best short stories I’ve ever read).

I first became a fan of Rachel Simon through her short story collection (sensing a theme yet?) Little Nightmares, Little Dreams, which is out of print now, but like Flannery and Lorrie, I’ll read anything she writes. (See my review of Rachel’s latest book, which has been renamed The House on Teacher’s Lane in paperback, here.)

As an adult, I never imagined reading young adult fiction but Beth Kephart has changed that.  Her books House of Dance, Nothing But Ghosts, and The Heart Is Not a Size (links take you to my reviews) are exquisite.

There are also a few men in my favorite author mix, such as Jay McInerney and Andrew Sean Greer (reviews of his The Story of a Marriage and The Confessions of Max Tivoli here).

I’m sure I could on, but then I’d miss out on discovering new-to-me blogs through the Hop ….

Visiting you through the Blog Hop–

A rivetting post! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your thoughts about your favorite writers and have made a note or two for myself.

Flannery O’Connor is indeed amazing, and to think–she was so ill with lupus and still managed to create works of art. Incredible.

Since her personal papers were opened to the public recently, hopefully we’ll learn much more about her artistic process and her struggles.

    Thank you so much.

I’ve been away and able to post but not able to read too much of anything. I had no knowledge that this was here…. was just reading through about you and 12th grade and the boy who broke your heart and then….

    Thank you!

Hi – I found you on the Blog Hop.

I have never read any Flannery O’Connor stories (hanging my head in shame) but she is on my list of authors to read before I die.
