When I was five years old, Santa Claus brought me a typewriter.
No more writing my stories and poems by hand. I was A Real Writer. After self-publishing my debut collection (“Stories by Melissa”) of illustrated stories and drawings a few days later, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
A few decades later, I am a writer – of blog posts, of creative nonfiction pieces, short stories in various stages of completion, grant proposals for the nonprofit I work for, grocery lists, and a novel that isn’t sure what the hell it wants to be when it grows up. I’m a freelance book reviewer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. In spring 2016, I was honored to be selected to be part of Listen to Your Mother Pittsburgh 2016, where I read the most personal story of my life onstage to an audience of hundreds.
Born and raised in suburban Philadelphia, I currently live with my husband and our 14 year old twins in Pittsburgh, Pa. My short, short story Extractions is available on Amazon.com in addition to three books I’ve edited.
